At Kater-Crafts we do
restoration work for the Special Collections of University and
Public Libraries, as well as Museums, rare book dealers and individual
collectors. We have restored and rebound books for libraries that
have had water, fire and earthquake damage.
Archival Repairs are
performed in the Restoration Department and the Special Sewing Department at
Kater-Crafts. We have a well trained staff to take care of your restoration and
preservation needs.
Aside from the repairs that a
bindery is expected to make, we also work on:
Flat
paper - Birth and Wedding Certificates, letters, posters, prints, etc.
Magazines
and paperbacks.
Vintage game and toy boxes.
Record album covers.
Articles
of leather - Picture frames, boxes, etc.
Articles
of vellum and parchment.
Repair Materials
range
from the time proven use of traditional Japanese Tissue and Wheat Paste, to
the newest innovations on the market today.
LAMINATION:
With nylon or Japanese tissue to reinforce fragile paper.
MYLAR ENCAPSULATION:
Encapsulating a document between two pieces of Mylar is an excellent
method of protecting the document from further damage. You can remove
the document at a future date, if necessary, since the Mylar is not attached
to the document. We can encapsulate the individual pages of a book and bind
them into a volume.
DEACIDIFICATION:
To prevent further acid damage to paper. We have two methods of
non-aqueous deacidification that can be used without taking the book
apart: Wei T’o and Bookkeeper. If we have to take the book
apart to resew it, we can use an aqueous method.
